BENGT ALMFJORD
Organist, Church musician

BENGT ALMFJORD

Bengt Almfjord  born 1961 in the north of Sweden. Church musician and composer mostly of church music but also of music in folkmusic-style, jazz, rock and gospel. Educated at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm with teachers like Hans Fagius in organ and Håkan Sund in piano improvisation. Since 2000 church musician in Osby in the south of Sweden.
In my work as a church musician I try to find different musical languages to texts from the Bible. To combine music in church with art, dance, acting and scenography is also of great interest for me. This has led to a ”CHRISTMAS ORATORIO” (2001) for choir, soli, strings and organ, ”MARKUS-PASSION- the veil of the temple was torn in two” (2006) for choir, soli, folkmusicensemble and scenography, ”JONA”(2009) small oratorio for four singers, violin, cello and organ and a great fish!
Believe that there is a great need for different creative expressions in the Christian church today. New technics in our churches inspire to use pictures, films and projections in church music-concerts and in services. I live in a rather small village in the south of Sweden with my dear wife, Ingrid who is a music teacher and singer. Our three children are also in music, dance and cartoon,  which is a great joy for us.
I have taken part of CRESCENDO through some of the annual conferences in different cities and through the magazines and printed material. All has been a great inspiration. To meet other creative Christian people from different countries in a kind and friendly atmosphere has been wonderful. And the high quality of music, expression and also friendship has meant a lot to me.

JAN KATZSCHKE
Organist, Church musician

JAN KATZSCHKE

Jan Katzschke, born in 1972 in Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony, absorbed central formative impulses during his student days in Hanover from his teachers Lajos Rovatkay (harpsichord) and Hans Christoph Becker-Foss (organ) and also from his work as a rehearsal assistant with Heinz Hennig’s Boys’ Choir, Hanover; private harpsichord lessons with Robert Hill followed later. After his first post as a cantor in the Ore Mountains in Saxony, 1995-97, he worked as a freelancer in Freiberg in Saxony and afterwards in the southern Black Forest. Since 2005, he has been cantor at the Deaconesses’ Church in Dresden, additionally taking over the cantorship of Freiberg Cathedral from 2007-2008.
In concerts and recordings as soloist and chamber musician on harpsichord, clavichord and organ and also as a conductor, Jan Katzschke has devoted himself to a wide musical spectrum from the Renaissance to the present day. The main focus of his work is a deepening involvement with the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach. He attracted international attention with his much-praised CD recording of the harpsichord works of Matthias Weckmann (cpo), which received the distinction of the “German Disc Critics’ Prize”. But the music of today is also close to his heart, as is reflected in the number of works written for him by the Latvian composer Rihards Dubra (* 1964).
As cantor at the Deaconesses’ Church in Dresden, he is intensively dedicated to the cantata and oratorio compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach as part of regular church services. He teaches organ at the Church Music College in Dresden as well as in courses, and is also vice-president of the Gottfried Silbermann Association, Freiberg. Musicological articles by him have appeared in diverse publications.
A continual “life theme” for Jan Katzschke is his battling for a contemporary and, in particular, a spiritual understanding of the content and values of (music) culture in church and society, currently endangered, in his view, by an increasing commitment to a purely external effectiveness and “usability”. From 1998-2010, not least with this motivation, he was a part-time staff member with Crescendo.

UWE STEINMETZ
Jazz musician

UWE STEINMETZ

Saxophonist and composer Uwe Steinmetz was born in Bremervörde, a town in northern Germany, in 1975. His musical influences came mainly from the teachers he studied and performed with during his school years in Berlin, Bern, Madras and Boston: John Surman, Lako Awraam, members of The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Bob Mintzer, Michael Brecker, David Liebman, George Russell, Jerry Bergonzi and Ben Schwendener among many others. He has performed his own music on four continents and in more than thirty countries and has received national and international awards for his artistic work, released so far 12 CDs with his own music and has appeared on numerous jazz CDs as a solist.
As a Christian he seeks to increase the awareness that music and other art forms can help people discover a deeper, healing and reconciling truth in an increasingly fragmented society and participates as an artist in projects that foster and encourage intercultural dialogue and support civil peace-building efforts.
He believes: "Music unifies mind and soul and brings us closer to truth in ourselves, the world and beyond all things. Music challenges us as human beings on all levels of our existence and ultimately shines a fresh, healing light on our momentary fears and longings, our perishable happiness and unhappiness. Music is a wonderful revelation of a creative God inspiring us to be creative with passionate love."
Uwe Steinmetz is leader of "Crescendo Jazz"
